Rosettes and plinth blocks come off cleanest when the tool holder sits dead-center in the machine spindle, and on equipment with a Morse taper socket this #2 Morse taper shank is the most direct way to get there. It fits Schmidt’s 2-knife corrugated back rosette tool holders — the 2-7/8″ AC818, 3-1/2″ AC819 and 4-3/4″ AC821 — which are designed for low-rpm machines such as drill presses, lathes and Bridgeport-type mills. Each holder ships with a 1/2″ or 3/4″ straight shank included; the #2 Morse taper shank is the optional third mounting, ordered separately for shops whose machines index on a taper rather than a chuck. Note that the 4-3/4″ AC821 holder accepts only the 3/4″ straight or #2 Morse taper shank, so specify the holder it will run on when ordering. The taper’s self-seating fit eliminates chuck runout, and a truer-running holder cuts crisper rosette detail with less tearout in the finished block.
