Softwood and general millwork running through a Weinig-pattern head is where solid high-speed steel earns its place. It takes a keener initial edge than carbide and costs a fraction as much per knife, so a shop can change a set mid-run without watching the tooling budget. Leitz grinds these as turnblade knives — 16 x 3 mm in section, with a serrated back that seats positively in the head and a ground cutting edge on both long faces. Reverse the knife and a second full edge comes up; after that it is replaced rather than reground, so there is no jointing, no setting gauges and no grinding room in the loop. The Type 530 head clamps by centrifugal force through a quick-action gib, with two lateral screws holding the wedge, which puts a knife change at minutes with a wrench instead of the setting time a conventional planer head costs. Stocked from 60mm to 650mm for Z2 and Z4 heads. On oak, abrasive hardwood or panel stock, carbide holds an edge far longer for the same setup time.
